According to a recently published article on the Huffington Post relating to the effects of chemically produced cosmetics on our bodies, researches are unsure what the long term effect just might be. Jessica Assaf, founder of the bioactive skincare line ‘Raw is Everything’, says: “We don’t know how these ingredients are interacting when they come into play. The average woman puts 515 synthetic chemicals on her body every single day without even knowing. And 60 percent of what we put onto our skin is absorbed into our bodies.”

So why use organic skincare products?

  1. Incredibly low regulation – There is a major problem in the commercial beauty product industry (or chemically produced beauty products), as there is little to no government regulations on what substances these daily used products comprise of. As stated in the Huffington Post article “The European Union has banned over 1,300 chemicals found in cosmetics. The FDA has only banned 8 and restricted 3.” It is clear from this text that many of the ingredients and products permitted in the U.S. have been banned in Europe and other countries, as past studies have demonstrated that such products are associated with cancer, reproductive harm and neurotoxicity. Furthermore, the FDA doesn’t impose any pre-market testing or approval before releasing these beauty products to the public.

  2. Natural Fragrance – The FDA doesn’t enforce cosmetic companies to disclose the ingredients used in their fragrances as these ingredients are viewed as ‘trade secrets’. Generally speaking, this enables cosmetic companies to put whatever they want into the product all whilst claiming that such components are necessary for the product’s fragrance. These components can be incredibly harmful and can possibly create allergic reactions for the consumer. According to a recently published interview with ‘Juice Beauty’ founder Karen Behnke on The Dermstore Blog, “Other potentially harmful ingredients present in non-organic products are synthetic fragrances and artificial dyes due to concerns associated with endocrine disruption, and parabens due to their link to breast cancer.”

  3. Lack of Nutrients – It is no secret that the majority of commercial beauty products lack in nutritional additives. Consequently, instead of enhancing the condition of the consumers’ skin, hair and nails, these chemically produced products can disguise potential health issues. Dr. Edward F. Group, founder of the ‘Global Healing Center’, claims the following: “Your skin has the ability to absorb certain compounds; however, a protective barrier is able to keep dangerous compounds, to some degree, out of the body. Even then, research still concludes that personal care products, when applied topically, can damage bodily systems and lead to untold health consequences”.

On the contrary, organic beauty products, which are rich in nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A, can mitigate such consequences. Furthermore, most organic and all-natural brands incorporate these fundamental vitamins into their products as well as enable consumers to purchase pure nourishing serums separately.  At Falls River Soap, all of our fragrances used in our natural handmade soaps are pure essential oils (plant extracts); our colorants are derived from herbs and other natural sources (like fruit or vegetable extracts); and our preservatives are plant extracts.
