Here’s how to do a DIY deodorant (inspired by How About Orange and Wellness Mama):

Equipment:

  • 4 tbsp coconut oil
  • 4 tbsp baking soda
  • 3 tbsp arrowroot powder
  • 3 tbsp Shea butter
  • 10 drops Bay Rum Essential Oil
  • Glass jar for mixing and storing
  • Metal spoon for stirring
  • Empty deodorant container (optional)

Method:

  • Where you mix your oils will depend on how you wish to store your deodorant. If you are just going to store it in a glass jar, then go ahead and mix the coconut oil and Shea butter in that jar. If you want to put the deodorant into an empty deodorant container for easier dispensing, then you’ll need a glass bowl to mix it up in first. In any case, add the coconut oil and Shea butter into the mixing container. Submerge in hot water until the oils begin to melt. Stir well to combine. Remove from water.
  • Mix in the baking soda and arrowroot powder. These are the magic ingredients that will help to absorb moisture from your armpits.
  • Mix very well until it reaches a smooth consistency. Add your essential oil and mix well one last time.
  • If you mixed it in the glass jar, then it’s finished and ready for use. It works best if you let it cool first. If you prefer it to have a very firm texture, you may wish to store it in the fridge.
  • If you want to put it in the empty deodorant container, you must let the mixture cool first. Once it is completely cool, you can fill your dispenser using a spoon. Be advised that this deodorant will be much less firm than normal deodorant.
  • To apply, simply use your hands or your deodorant stick dispenser to apply a small amount to each armpit. Rub in well so that it can absorb. Wait a minute or two before putting on your shirt to make sure it all gets absorbed. Reapply as often as needed.
